I belong to Talkbass.com. It is many things, but to me it serves two main purposes:
1) It gives me insight on all things bass guitar related.
2) It provides (another) place in which to spend money.
I've purchased some things lately over there. Luckily, all of it has been good. Alas, this is not a talkbass plug. But in case anyone who plays bass hasn't found this site yet, go check it out. One of my favorite avitars is one of a bass playing a bass. Get it? I like it.
A what?
I have a friend who is just starting to play bass. He lives in Ft. Lauderdale so I only give him pointers on the phone...usually on my way to work. I conduct many important "business" calls on my 45 minute drive to work. Anyway, he picked up an older Fender 5 string. He said it was really hard to play. So I asked him if he's had a set up done on it. "A what?" he asked.
Any body buying an instrument, whether it's new or just new to you deserves a setup. It's a neccesity to have someone else do it until you learn to do it on your own. He took it to a local Guitard Center where they set it up for him for about $50. That's pretty steep. But I guess it needed the work. Long story short, it was money well spent because he says it's much, much easier to play now.
Next time I'll discuss one of the most common questions: Do I start with a 4 or a 5 string bass? I'll also add a story on my friend above who acquired a really nice bass and managed to piss me off at the same time.
